BECOME A MASTER GEOTHERMAL INSTALLER |
|
|
Minnesota has no state licensing requirements for geothermal installation. The MNGHPA Master Geothermal Installer (MGI) designation fills that gap — giving qualified contractors a way to demonstrate their expertise, and giving consumers a reliable way to find them.
Two Designations |
MGI — System Geothermal System Designation Covers the full geothermal heat pump system: design, sizing, equipment selection, and installation of indoor components. Demonstrates mastery of system-level geothermal work. | MGI — Loop Field Ground Loop Designation Covers ground loop design and installation: vertical boreholes, horizontal loops, pond loops, looping, and grouting. Contractors may hold one or both designations. |
How to Earn the MGI Designation The following requirements apply to both designations. Contractors who hold the MGI designation have met all four criteria and passed a rigorous exam. |
1 | Meet the experience requirement Applicants must document a minimum number of completed geothermal installations appropriate to the designation sought. (See the MGI application below for specific requirements.) |
2 | Complete required training Formal training through IGSHPA or an approved equivalent program is required before applying to sit for the exam. |
3 | Pass the MGI exam A rigorous written exam administered by MNGHPA. Covers system design, installation standards, and Minnesota-specific regulatory requirements. Applicants must pass before receiving the designation. |
4 | Commit to ongoing education MGI holders must maintain continuing education and uphold the MNGHPA Code of Ethics to retain their designation. Renewal requirements ensure credentials remain current. |
Why Earn the MGI Designation? Designation as a Master Geothermal Installer sets you apart from other contractors because it demonstrates your commitment to the proper design and installation of geothermal systems through documented experience, formal education, and independent testing.
